Final Greetings October 4, 2013

Here are my thoughts on 2 Timothy 4:19-22.

Summary: Paul begins by asking Timothy to convey his greetings to several believers in Ephesus. After encouraging Timothy to visit him before inclement weather can hamper his travels, he conveys greetings to Timothy from several believers in Rome.

Paul concludes by praying that God would be with Timothy as he carries out the duties of an evangelist; he also wishes God’s unmerited favor on all of the believers in Ephesus.

Thoughts: Now that I have completed my stroll through 2 Timothy, I believe that the theme of both of Paul’s epistles to Timothy is: exhortation. Paul spends much of both letters exhorting Timothy to fulfill his responsibilities as a minister who has been appointed by God. He repeatedly exhorts Timothy to focus on preaching the pure (and simple) Gospel message – while avoiding relatively minor disputes. He also repeatedly exhorts Timothy to continue on the right path that he had embarked on at a young age – instead of falling by the wayside. In light of these exhortations, one must wonder if Timothy felt rather overwhelmed after reading these letters. Was he able to process all of Paul’s exhortations, or did they simply wash over him? I am eager to meet Timothy in the next life and learn how he responded to these letters.
